As you probably have noticed our new Materia website is online!

The website www.materialexplorer.com and www.materia.nl have been incorporated into one Knowledgebase www.materia.nl this month! With this knowledgebase, Materia gives you access to a worldwide platform of material information.

The new website comes with a new look for our monthly newsletter. So as usual, this Newsletter of October 2007 again is packed full of new materials, events and information. For your material inspiration, read on!

Can we get rid of our air condition systems? Saving energy for cooling with phase-change materials. BASF's Micronal phase-change microcapsules are able to absorb heat and release it at a later time. Like ice cubes! they are an example of how phase-change materials work: as they melt in a drink, they absorb heat from the environment; as they solidify in the freezer, they release heat into it.

Mammoth dung, prehistoric Goo may speed global warming! For millennia, animal waste, left behind by the creatures that used to roam the Arctic, have been sealed inside the permafrost. Now climate-change is thawing the permafrost and lifting this ooze from suspended animation. A scientist who studied climate change in the Arctic, believes that as the organic matter becomes exposed to the air it will accelerate global warming faster than even some of the most pessimistic forecasts. read more




Materia coming up


Physical Building Materials for Architecture. Not only aesthetic qualities but also the physical building qualities of materials will be discussed during The Noise, Vibration and Air Quality (GTL) Trade Fair at Nieuwegein, The Netherlands on 6-7 November 2007. Els Zijlstra of Materia will be giving a lecture about various materials that improve the physical comfort of the internal and external living climate. This congress will be conducted in Dutch. read more.


Events review


There is no doubt about it, the Green Matter exposition and the lecture of Els Zijlstra on the BIS Fair in Belgium, was a great success! Our collection of the latest 100 environmentally friendly materials attracted a lot of attention, not only form the visitors , but also from national radio and television. The exposition with the unknown or unusual materials definitely inspired many visitors again read more

The bubble gum brooch of Marion van Cruchten, shown in the spotlight of previous newsletter has nothing to do with Gumnetic material, so hereby the introduction of her projects. Childhood memories, like overblown dandelions, are the bases for the jewellery 'forgotten memories'. Values en norms are the starting points of her work. From this she develops jewellery that make a statement about evaluation, prejudices, appreciation and opening someone's eyes.
