Co-Creation Award nominees 2014

The nominees for this year’s Co-Creation Award are announced today.

One of Materia’s main goals is to encourage collaboration between manufacturers, architects and designers.

We do this because we’ve seen that when creative professionals and industry experts collaborate, new ideas get the chance to be developed, so that real innovation can be achieved.

The Co-Creation Award is one of the ways we try to stimulate this. The competition is held annually, and the winner is announced during Material Xperience, our biggest and most important annual show.

The four projects nominated for the award this year are listed below in alphabetical order.

1. Biobased Façade
Project: Gas transfer-station facade
Architect: Studio Marco Vermeulen
Manufacturer: NPSP

Biobased Façade’ is a natural-based composite façade for a utilities building. The natural fibres are mostly hemp, and a biobased resin is used to complete the façade panels, which have a dark brown colour. The project is by architects: Studio Marco Vermeulen and the manufacturer is NPSP.

2. Five Petals
Project: Museum installation
Architect: Patrick Jouin
Manufacturer: Nedcam

‘Five Petals’ is a led-light museum installation with 3D moulded panels which are shaped to adjust to the forces acting on the objects. The design is completed with digitally placed led lamps. This co-creation is by Patrick Jouin and Nedcam.

3. Ceramic museum
Project: ‘Museum De Fundatie’
Architect: Bierman Henket
Manufacturer: Tichelaar

‘Museum De Fundatie’ is a rounded extension to a museum. The ball-shaped and lightly coloured façade uses specially developed ceramic tiles in specific shapes and colours. Ceramics masters Tichelaar worked with architects Bierman Henket on the design.

4. Parking garage
Project: Morspoort garage
Architect: Paul de Ruiter
Manufacturers: Aan de Stegge Twello; Kremmin Nets & Ropes

‘Morspoort Garage’ is a gauze-covered parking garage. The translucent material was selected by local residents and the project development was a collaboration between Paul de Ruiter Architects, and manufacturer Aan de Stegge Twello and Kremmin Nets & Ropes.

All these projects stood out because of the collaboration between the architect and the manufacturer took the design to another level as a result of the shared expertise of the partners.

The winning co-creation will be announced during a ceremony at Material Xperience in Rotterdam, at 17:00 on January 23rd 2014. The prize is an extensive media package including an in-depth video interview, an editorial and a social media campaign. The jury consists of architecture veteran Kees van der Hoeven; Materia founder and creative director Els Zijlstra; and Materia editor Philip Allin.

Last year, the team of Holland Composites and Benthem Crouwel architects won the prize with their Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Find out the 2014 winner at Material Xperience!
