The Kaleidoscopic Installations of Suzan Drummen

Suzan Drummen is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in the Netherlands. Her colourful works include installations made of glittering gems, crystals, precious stones, optical glass, mirrors and chrome-plated metals that have been laid freely on the ground. The result is spectacular and dazzling.

Incredibly, Drummen does not start with a plan or specific design when she begins these creations. Instead, she is guided by the specificities of each site – from its visitors to its lighting, colours and atmosphere.

Working gem-by-gem and stone-by-stone, her installations slowly and organically evolve into finished works that attract the eye of the viewer from a distance with a clearly ordered and patterned design. Upon closer inspection, the fine details dazzle and overwhelm the viewer with complex detail and stimuli, thus challenging and intensifying the viewer’s visual perception and experience.

The twinkling surfaces, the colour contrasts, the use and reuse of repetitive themes are characteristic of Suzan Drummen’s work. Everything keeps returning in a different form: in different materials or on a different scale. Works endlessly mirror each other. Sometimes there are round photos of earlier works placed between the stones. The viewer is always faced with an abundance of sensory perceptions.
