Precious Plastic: Build Your Own Plastic Recycling Factory

Currently, less than 10% of the world’s waste plastic is recycled. Project Precious Plastic from Dutch innovator Dave Hakkens however seeks to change this dismal statistic with a do-it-yourself machine that enables everyone to work with machines and start recycling plastic on their own.

With a machine and some waste plastic, creators can set up small scale production, starting an at home business and plastic factory that can create items of value in addition to helping the planet. With the machine, plastic is shredded into small pieces that can then be formed into containers, pots, functional tools and many more items your can explore here.

The blueprints, a series of detailed instruction videos and the download-kit are shared open source online and can be downloaded for free. According to the machine’s creator, this free download is all the basic information people need to build their own machines and start a little plastic factory. The machines are specifically developed using universal materials and basic tools that are available all over the world. They are also modular in design, so they can be easily repaired, upgraded or adapted.

Precious Plastic is started by Dave Hakkens, a 27 year old designer from the Netherlands. He is best known for his modular phone project, Phonebloks. He describes himself as someone who likes to work on global problems by looking for scalable solutions together with people from all over the world. He also likes to make awesome videos!
